SILVADUR™ antimicrobial technology vs. silver nanoparticles

Antimicrobial products kill or slow down the spread of microbes or microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, protozoa and fungi like molds. The antimicrobial effect of silver ions (Ag+) has been known for centuries. Silver has the natural ability to kill harmful micro-organisms, the ions have a very broad spectrum of activity and are extremely effective in controlling the growth of a wide range of micro-organisms. Before the development of antibiotics, silver was perhaps the most important antimicrobial agent. Silver compounds were used to treat stomach ailments, heal wounds, conserve water and much more. Silver fibers (like gold ones) were widely used in the manufacture of textiles, notably royal garments.

The inherent properties of textile fibers can favor the growth of microorganisms, and this phenomenon can be exacerbated by the presence of body fluids such as sweat, oils, urine, etc., and hot, humid environments. Microbial growth on fabrics can cause odors, create holes and destroy fabric integrity, cause staining and discoloration, and generally shorten the life of a fabric. As a result, silver nanoparticles have recently made a comeback in textiles for their antimicrobial properties.

SILVADUR™ does not use nanotechnology.

SILVADUR™ antimicrobial technology is a mixture containing fully soluble silver ions and a fully soluble polymer in a mixture of water and/or ethanol. The silver component is not present as detectable individual metal particles of any size, but rather as dissolved chemical ions.

In contrast, nanosilver antimicrobial technology retains and utilizes the silver metals, which therefore remain present as metallic particles.

Our products do not contain nanotechnology in their manufacture. In recent times, many concerns have been raised about the effects of nanosilver on health and the environment. Scientific studies have concluded that nanoparticles can easily migrate into the body's cells and affect cellular function. In particular, preliminary research on laboratory rats has established that silver nanoparticles can penetrate the brain and cause neuronal degeneration and necrosis (for more information: https://www.actu-environnement.com/ae/news/commision-europe-avis-CSREN-nanoargent-consultation-risques-toxicite-20284.php4).

In contrast, our manufacturer AKAS - Wazoodle uses SILVADUR™ antimicrobial treatment on its products. This treatment inhibits bacterial growth and the accumulation of microbes on fabric surfaces. SILVADUR™ antimicrobial technology is a silver technology containing a durable polymer that delivers a low concentration of silver ions only when needed, i.e. when microbes land or form on a treated fabric. These ions continuously and safely kill the microbes that cause odors and material degradation.

Fabrics treated with SILVADUR™ deliver long-lasting antimicrobial performance. They are non-toxic and non-irritating to human skin. They offer enhanced freshness and therefore require fewer washes, benefiting both the consumer and the environment. The efficacy of SILVADUR™ fabrics has been tested over 50 wash cycles, and they show an excellent microbial reduction rate of over 99%, even after 50 washes.
